Fat Loss and Weight Training Myths

Review by james
Here is part of a good article on fat loss and weight training myths. Read the full article here.

Spot Reduction Myth
Contrary to what the infomercials suggest there is no such thing as spot reduction. Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern dependent upon genetics, sex (hormones), and age. Overall body fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area. Although fat is lost or gained throughout the body it seems the first area to get fat, or the last area to become lean, is the midsection (in men and some women, especially after menopause) and hips and thighs (in women and few men). Sit-ups, crunches, leg-hip raises, leg raises, hip adduction, hip abduction, etc. will only exercise the muscles under the fat.

Oral Glutamine a waste of Money?

Review by james
There are many studies posted on PubMed that say Glutamine has no benefit to building muscle or strength. Below you will find some quotes from these studies posted on PubMed.

"We conclude that glutamine supplementation during resistance training has no significant effect on muscle performance, body composition or muscle protein degradation in young healthy adults." PubMed ID = 17111006

"there is little support from controlled studies to recommend glutamine ingestion for enhanced immune function, and although glutamine stimulates muscle glycogen synthesis, its addition to carbohydrate supplements provides no additional benefit over ingestion of carbohydrate alone." PubMed ID = 11255141

Doing a search for Glutamine on PubMed you will find more studies that have similar results as the ones quoted here. I have used Glutamine in the past and it has always been one of those supplements where I thought to myself is this even doing anything.

Looking for an Olympic Shrug Bar?

Jesup Gym has the flat style and the high lift style at a very reasonable price. Also check out the "Mega" and "Combo" shrug bars. I have bought many things from Jesup Gym, they are good people to work with.

I was recently searching the net for a good weightlifting/powerlifting community site to join and I came across this new one called www.howmuchubench.com . This was BY FAR AND AWAY the best weightlifting community site I've come across. On the site, you can enter in all your work out stats, like your maximum bench, squat, deadlift, etc., and then you can rank yourself by country, state, and city. It's really cool. Plus the people i've met on the site have been very nice. I've gotten a bunch of great work out tips from them. the only downside of the site is that it's yet to really hit it big, so there's not so many members. I think this will change since the site's only about 3 months old I think. So, if you've been looking for a great weightlifting or powerlifting version of myspace then this is the site for you. Again, check it out at www.howmuchubench.com -MDB

Thinking about starting a home gym? Wondering what to buy? One of the best things to start out with is a Power Rack. Power Racks are generally affordable, and they give you the ability to perform many free weight exercises with added safety. If you like to work out alone having the side arms in the power rack is essential especially with squats. You can comfortably do heavier weights with squats knowing you can only go so far down on failure. If you also buy an adjustable bench it will enable you to do incline press, bench press, and decline press etc, also shoulder presses are easier to handle when an adjustable weight bench is set up straight. Many power racks come with options to buy attachments that let you do pull downs and tri presses in the Power Rack. For the price and added safety with free weights the Power Rack is one of the best things to have for a home gym.

Optimum Nutritions Whey Protein and Casein Protein has become very popular with weightlifters over the years. Whey protein has rapid digestion, then to the other side casein protein has more of a delayed release. It is common practice for weightlifters to use whey protein after a workout and then use casein protein before bed. This allows your body to have a delayed release of protein while you sleep and your body is in its prime state to repair muscle. Taking whey protein after a workout gives rapid absorption of protein to starving muscles. Here is an excellent article on post workout nutrition. Also another good article on Casien Protein.

Optimum Nutrition is easy to mix and has many flavors to choose from, unlike many protein powders out there ON tastes good and is affordable.. The Gold Standard Whey Protein brand is packed with about all you need in a protein powder. With many flavors to choose from such as Chocolate Mint, Cookies and Cream, Rocky Road and also the old stand bys like Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry. The Casein Protein has such flavors as Chocolate Supreme and Creamy Vanilla. Since Casein Protein dose not mix as well as whey a blender is usually useful. Other than that both brands of ON protein are good buys.
